Interior wall sconces are a great way to give character to any room. There are a few general rules to follow with regards to their placement that when followed will create a warm, pleasurable ambiance. One of the first things to consider about placement is the height they are placed. You will also want to pay attention to how far apart they are placed. There are also some considerations when you use sconces to accent an item.
Dont place them at a level that will cause a glare in your eyes. Most experts recommend placing them at a level of 5 feet or more above floor, even higher in places with higher ceilings. When they are placed too low, you run the risk of bumping into them not to mention that at that point they begin to detract from the look of the room. Another point of consideration is the height of the people who live or occupy the room. Obviously if candle sconces are being used in a room occupied by a tall family, you will want to raise the height a bit.
When wall sconces are used to accent an item in the room they should be placed in such a way as to provide a soft glow and not overpower the item you wish to draw attention to. They should be placed in such a way as to draw your eye towards the object you wish to be looked at. Any time they are grouped together too closely, the warm glow becomes a bright light that will most likely become a focal area that is displeasing to the eye and a distraction to what has been placed between them. The last thing you want is for the object you are attracting attention to to appear to be on fire!
When using interior wall sconces along a hallway, it is always best to place them approximately 10 feet apart from each other. For the same reason as mentioned above, the combined brightness will often create too much brightness and will cause a displeasing effect.
By following the above guidelines regarding paying attention to spacing, following height recommendations and placing your candle sconces in the appropriate proximity of the items you wish to accent, even someone without an artistic bent can use an interior wall sconce in such a way as to create a warm, comfortable atmosphere.
